The Flooded Island of Bulacan (Pamarawan)

Just off the coast of Malolos, Bulacan lies Pamarawan, a small island barangay of 3,336 people known for its fishing and salt making heritage. But today, Pamarawan stands on the frontline of crisis: sea level rise, land subsidence, and reclamation have placed the community in danger.

A 2023 report from Rappler, citing a study by the UP Marine Science Institute, found that Bulacan’s coastal zones are at very high risk from rising seas, which are moving at more than triple the global average. In this short documentary, we sail into Pamarawan’s shrinking shores and meet Ferdinand, a lifelong fisherfolk, and Alex Dulet, a salt maker. Through their stories, we see how bayanihan, resilience, and cultural identity keep the people of Pamarawan strong, even as their home slowly disappears to the sea.
