The Most Popular Island in the Philippines Can’t Feed Itself Yet (Siargao)

Siargao was recently hailed as one of the top destinations in the world and has quickly become a hotspot for tourists in the Philippines. Alongside this sudden popularity comes the side effects of mass tourism that the island was initially not prepared for. To understand the current situation better, we interviewed some local changemakers in Siargao that are actively working towards sustainable tourism.

Lokal Lab is a grassroots NGO that is helping Surigaonons preserve their culture and heritage through sustainable farming, community building efforts, and other educational programs. We talked to their founders and the people that are helping their cause on a daily basis to learn more about their vision and ask what success looks like for the next few years in Siargao.
